WiMAX on the “Holy Mountain”
Hellenic Telecom announced today the deployment of a pilot fixed WiMAX on Mount Athos, aka “Holy Mountain”. According to this press release (in Greek) the pilot network includes six IEEE 802.16-2004 operating at 3.5 GHz, and is powered by solar and wind energy. The press release also seems to imply that the pilot fixed WiMAX network serves as backhaul for standard ADSL connections and will be used to deliver VoIP services. There is no electricity on Mount Athos. See also today’s coverage on Bloomberg.
